Looking Ahead

A recent article in Quanta Magazine profiles the work of Jeff Gore, a physicist at MIT who has transitioned to ecology. This is the first semester of my sophomore year and I am already feeling the pressure to specialize. As time progresses I can only take so many classes and the pre-requisites start narrowing my path. It is inspire to see that our journey is not overdetermined by what we do now but by our curiosity and our willingness to continue learning. This provides a bit of relief and direction knowing we are not determining our academic career with then selection of classes for next semester. Even more so, it might be that the things we learn today in one field will have a great impact on our work in another decades down the road.
