Sh***y First Drafts

The title is not just to attract attention.  It a reference to the very valuable chapter in Anne Lamott's book on writing Bird by Bird.

Our rough drafts are due this week.  It is easy to feel a lot of pressure, that it is not perfect and that you do not want to share it.  Even worse this fear can lead to not writing at all, because we might think what we write is crap.  When it comes to crappy first draft Lamott notes, "All good writers write them. This is how they end up with good second drafts and terrific third drafts."

The same goes for for us.  No one will judge you on your rough draft and it is not the end of your work, but it has to be the beginning.  As Lamott ends the piece:

"Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere."

I wish you luck and hope you find a way to embrace that first draft as a stepping stone in your development.
